Employees of the Moscow zoo asked residents and guests of the capital region, it was published on the official website of the organization on the Internet. An appeal to Muscovites says that the end of September is an ideal time to collect acorns, which are essential for exotic insects.
Those who want to help the zoo should know which acorns are the most high-quality and suitable for further germination in a zoo.
Acorns should be collected mainly under large oaks, as a rule, in this case, the fruits that have fallen from the trees lie on a dense carpet and a lot of time for their collection is not required.
Be sure to keep the acorns large, firm and free of damage. If the fruits are harvested under a sick tree, there is no guarantee that even in whole acorns there will be no larvae of harmful insects.
It is important to know that acorns cannot be stored for a long time in plastic bags, as they quickly block and become unsuitable for subsequent planting within the zoo. It is advisable to quickly take the available oak fruits and take them to the zoo.
Acorns are accepted daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the pavilion "Fauna of Indonesia" at the exhibition "Insectopia" (except Monday and Tuesday). You can also leave “help” to the zoo staff at the service entrance from Zoologicheskaya Street.
Young trees sprouted from acorns will be an excellent food for the inhabitants of terrariums this winter. It will be possible to see how insects absorb oak leaves at the Insectopia exhibition.
